‘Selkie’ is a hand-carved, hand-printed lino artwork inspired by Scottish folklore and a deeply personal experience. The image features a solitary Selkie — a mythical shapeshifter who moves between seal and human form — surrounded by swirling water lines, hand-drawn directly onto the lino block.

The idea for this piece emerged after a striking encounter earlier this year: as I received a phone call about a follow-up breast screening, a seal appeared in the ocean in front of me. That moment of uncertainty and fear was unexpectedly accompanied by a quiet sense of support. The screening was ultimately clear, but the seal’s arrival stayed with me. It felt symbolic — a comforting sign, tied to the long-standing belief that animals sometimes appear just when we need them.

I’ve long been drawn to folklore and women’s stories, and this print is part of that ongoing exploration. The Selkie — caught between worlds, wildness, and vulnerability — felt like the perfect figure to express this connection.

The process began with a pencil drawing, which I transferred onto lino. I drew the water swirls freehand with ink before carving the entire image using specialised lino tools. Ink is hand-rolled onto the carved surface, and each print is made using my printing press at home. Every piece is individually inked and printed, making each impression slightly unique.

This edition is strictly limited to 20 prints. Each is titled, numbered (e.g. 1/20), and signed.

Printed on high-quality, heavyweight Rosapina Fabriano paper (ivory, acid-free, 100% cotton rag) with professional rubber-based Van Son ink. The paper’s subtle ‘Fabriano’ watermark may be visible on some prints and adds to the authenticity of the material.

You can choose to frame with or without a mount — both options work beautifully. As each sheet is hand-cut, slight variations in paper size are normal. I recommend waiting until the print arrives before organising framing.
